What it is
A declaration that can be issued by the Consulate if required by the Japanese authorities to prove the marital status of Brazilians wishing to register their marriage at the prefecture. The person concerned must reside within the jurisdiction of the Consulate General in Tokyo.
💡 Marriages of Brazilians celebrated by foreign authorities are considered valid under Brazilian law. Therefore, a Brazilian citizen who has married abroad will also be considered married in Brazil.
How to apply
With the necessary documents in hand, book the service through the e-Consular system. Check out the system tutorial here.
Documents required

Consular fee

Requests by post
After requesting the service through the e-Consular system and receiving validation from the Consulate, mail the original documents and one copy of each, plus the consular fee in the form of a postal order, which can be purchased at any Japanese post office. Click here

The declaration and original documents will be returned by collect takkyubin (着払い).
For other purposes
If it is not for marriage registration, but to obtain a benefit from the city hall, the service to be requested via e-Consular should be that of Signature Recognition / サインの認証(窓口申請), so that your signature can be recognized on your own declaration.
When requesting via e-Consular, also send one of the following certificates:
- If single:
2nd copy of the birth certificate, less than 6 months old, issued by a civil registry office in Brazil;
⚠️ In the case of birth certificates issued by the Consulate, they must be transferred to a civil registry office in Brazil. - If divorced:
2nd copy of the Brazilian marriage certificate with divorce annotation, less than 6 months old, issued by a civil registry office in Brazil - If widowed:
- 2nd copy of the Marriage Certificate with annotation of widowhood; or
- 2nd copy of the marriage certificate plus the death certificate of the spouse, less than 6 months old, issued by a civil registry office in Brazil.
