National Commission for the Sustainable Development Goals

Created by Presidential Decree n. 8,892/16, the National Commission for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has the purpose of adopting, disseminating and giving transparency to the process of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Brazil. It is a collegial body, of an advisory nature, for coordination, mobilization and dialogue between federative entities and civil society. The Commission is composed of eight government representatives (Government Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Civil Office of the Presidency of the Republic, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Citizenship, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of the Environment, State/District Government representative; Municipal Government representative) and eight representatives of civil society and the private sector, chosen by public announcement. The Commission has the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) as permanent technical advisory bodies.

The Commission launched its Action Plan 2017-2019 on December 15, 2017. As a tool to improve public policies in the implementation of SDGs in Brazil, the Plan of Action has five main strategic axes: a transversal, management and governance of the Commission, and other 4 final axes: dissemination, internalization, adoption and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda.

In March 2018 the Commission held the national launch of the first edition of the SDG Award. The award is an initiative of the Federal Government that aims to encourage, value and give visibility to practices that contribute to the achievement of the goals of the 2030 Agenda across the country. The first edition of the Award had 1,045 entries to compete in four categories: government; for-profit organizations; non-profit organizations; and teaching, research and extension institutions. Seminars were held in all units of the Federation to publicize the SDG Brazil Award. The goal is to engage a wide range of stakeholders in order to disseminate the SDGs, stimulate sustainable development practices and build a database of best practices. The winners received the prizes in December 2018 in a ceremony that was attended by the Chief Minister of the Civil Office of the Presidency.
