Benefits

  • Monthly stipend - R$ 2,100.00 for Master's degree (duration of 24 months) and R$ 3,100.00 for Doctorate degree (duration of 48 months).
  • Access to the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) - Access throughout Brazil, on the same conditions as Brazilian citizens, without discrimination based on nationality or immigration status.
  • Financial aid to return to the country of origin - paid by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), depending on budgetary and financial availability. The aid amount varies according to the country of origin and is defined in a table attached to MRE Ordinance No. 572/2024.

Who can apply

Anyone interested in participating in the PEC-PG Program must meet the following requirements:

  • Call Notice requirements; and
  • specific requirements of the Graduate Program (PPG) of your interest, including language requirements.

Call Notice requirements

You must:

  • Be a national of one of the countries participating in the Program
  • Live in one of the countries participating in the Program
  • Not have Brazilian nationality (not having dual Brazilian nationality nor the right to it)
  • Not have a permanent residence permit for Brazil
  • Have completed a higher education course equivalent to an undergraduate degree (graduação)
  • Not be taking, in Brazil, another course of the same level that you intend to take in PEC-PG
  • Have a clean record, with no debts with CAPES or the Brazilian government
  • Be able to start the course within the deadline of the Postgraduate Program
  • Have an updated CV on the Lattes platform (if you don't have a Lattes CV yet, register here)
  • Not have a doctorate degree
  • Have spent at least 2 years in your country after: i) obtaining a Brazilian diploma, in the case of PEC-G graduates and candidates who received a scholarship from a Brazilian funding agency to pursue undergraduate studies in Brazil; and ii) obtaining a master's degree (professional or academic), in the case of candidates who received a scholarship from a Brazilian funding agency, including PEC-PG scholarships from CAPES or CNPq
  • If you wish to enroll in a master's program: you must not have been awarded a master's scholarship (sandwich or full) by a Brazilian federal public entity for the intended master's program or another master's program previously completed
  • If you wish to enroll in a doctoral program (sandwich or full program): you must not have been awarded a doctoral scholarship (sandwich or full program) by a Brazilian federal public entity for the intended doctoral program or for another doctoral program previously completed
  • Comply with all other rules of the Call Notice

Specific requirements

In addition to the Call Notice requirements, you must meet the specific requirements of the graduate program you wish to pursue. Check the list of available HEIs/ICTs to learn about the requirements for each course.

Application

The selection process for the PEC-PG program will consist of the following stages:

  • From June 29th to August 13th, Brazilian institutions (HEIs/ICTs) will submit proposals to CNPq.
  • In December 2026, CNPq will publish the list of HEIs/ICTs that will be eligible to receive PEC-PG students.
  • From December 2026, each HEI/ICT will conduct its own selection of candidates for the PEC-PG program.
  • Between March 2027 and March 2028, HEIs/ICTs must begin paying out scholarships.

Steps to apply:

  • STEP 1: Wait until December 2026, when CNPq will publish the list of HEIs/ICTs that may receive PEC-PG students.
  • STEP 2: Check the list of HEIs/ICTs to find out which Graduate Programs (PPGs) are included and what their specific requirements are.
  • STEP 3: Contact the HEIs/ICTs of your interest, or access their websites, to find out how to apply for a PEC-PG scholarship.
  • STEP 4: Await the results of the selection process conducted by the HEI/ICT.
  • STEP 5: Prepare to come to Brazil and start your activities between March 2027 and March 2028.

Documents

To begin receiving the scholarship, you will need to submit the following documents and information:

  • Digital copy of the personal information page from your passport
  • Proof of CPF (Brazilian Individual Taxpayer Registry) registration status
  • Proof of residence abroad (such as a water or electricity bill)
  • Valid ORCID number
  • Research project in Portuguese, Spanish or English
  • A statement of employment ( if applicable), updated and issued by the organization or institution where you work, in Portuguese, Spanish, or English
  • Complete, updated Lattes CV in Portuguese
  • A statement from the Graduate Program confirming regular enrollment in a stricto sensu graduate program at the master's or doctoral level. The statement must also indicate that your stay in Brazil will not exceed the maximum period stipulated for the defense of your dissertation or thesis.Additional documents by modality
