Socialist Republic of Viet Nam

Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Vietnam were established in 1989. The Brazilian Embassy in Hanoi was opened in 1994, and Vietnam opened its Embassy in Brasília in 2000.
Brazil and Vietnam maintain two mechanisms of regular dialogue: consultations on matters of mutual interest and the joint commission, established in 1995 and 2008, respectively.
Instruments currently in force cover diplomat training; partial visa exemption; sports; the fight against hunger; science and technology; health; trade; and culture. In 2017, a Maritime Transport Agreement was signed, which is under consideration in the National Congress. Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister, Vuong Dinh Hue, visited Brazil in July 2018, during which instruments on air services, agricultural cooperation, and technical cooperation between trade and investment promotion agencies were signed.
In 2018, trade between Brazil and Vietnam totaled $4.2 billion, the highest value on records. Brazilian exports amounted to $1.9 billion, while imports from Vietnam reached $2.3 billion. Vietnam is one of the ten members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), founded in 1967. In 2018, Brazil’s trade with ASEAN countries totaled more than $19.4 billion.
