United Republic of Tanzania

Brazil and Tanzania established diplomatic relations in 1970. The Brazilian Embassy in Dar es Salaam was opened in 1979, closed in 1991, and reopened in 2005. Tanzania established its Embassy in Brasília in 2007.
The first Brazilian presidential visit to Tanzania took place in 2010, when President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited Dar es Salaam. To reciprocate this visit, Brazil received the Tanzanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Bernard Membe (2010), Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda (2011), and President Jakaya Kikwete (2012). In 2024, President Samia Suluhu Hassan visited Brazil, at the invitation of President Lula, to take part in the G20 Summit.
Brazil's cooperation with Tanzania includes initiatives in various areas. Both trilaterally and bilaterally, initiatives have been developed in the agricultural, health, energy, sports, and child protection sectors. Currently, a program promoting decent work in the cotton sector is being implemented, along with bilateral programs to strengthen the cotton and fisheries sectors. There are also three bilateral technical cooperation requests under negotiation, in the areas of sickle cell disease, maternal health, and neonatal health.
In 2024, trade between Brazil and Tanzania totaled $51 million (a 35% decrease compared to 2023). Brazil exported $49.4 million, with an emphasis on sugar (39%), poultry meat (17%), and artificial fibers for spinning (8.7%). Imports from Tanzania amounted to $2.2 million, mainly tobacco (74%) and plastic materials in primary forms (17%).
