Togolese Republic

Brazil recognized the Independence of Togo in 1960 and established diplomatic relations with that African country in 1962 with the creation of the non-resident Embassy in Accra (Ghana). In 1978, Brazil and Togo opened resident embassies.

Cooperation is a pillar of the bilateral relationship and is founded upon the Basic Technical and Scientific Cooperation Agreement and the Cultural Agreement, both signed in 1972. Within this context, projects aimed at cotton cultivantion and school feeding stand out.

Chronology of bilateral relations

2019  –  The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration and Togolese Abroad, Robert Dussey, visits Brazil (June)

2015 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Togo, Robert Dussey, visits Brazil  (February). The Embassy of Togo in Brasília is reopened.

2014 – Minister of Agriculture Ouro Koura Agadazi visits Brazil

2012 – Minister of Trade Arthème Kwesi Ahoumey-Zunu visits Brazi (March)

2009  – Minister of Foreign Affairs Celso Amorim visits Togo accompanied by a business mission. The First Meeting of the Brazil-Togo Joint Commission is held in Lomé and the a memorandum of understanding is signed establishing the bilateral Political Consultations Mechanism

2005  – The Embassy of Brazil in Lome is reopened

1999  –  The Embassy of Togo in Brasília is temporarily closed

1997  –  The Embassy of Brazil in Lome is temporarily closed

1988  –  Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Yaovi Adodo visits Brazil

1985  –  Brazil participates in the Donor Conference for Togo, held in Lome

1982  –  The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Togo, Kuma Akakpo Ahianyo, visits Brazil

1978  –  Opening of the Embassy of Brazil in Lome and the Embassy of Togo in Brasília

1977  – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Eden Kodjo visits Brazil

1972 – Minister of Foreign Affairs Mário Gibson Barboza visits Togo. Signing of  a Cultural Agreement and a Basic Technical and Scientific Cooperation Agreement

1962  – Brazil and Togo establish diplomatic relations. The Brazilian Embassy in Accra (Ghana) becomes cumulatively responsible for representing Brazil before Togolese authorities

1960  –  Brazil reognizes Togo's independence on April 26
