Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Türkiye began with the signing of the Bilateral Treaty of Friendship and Commerce (1858). In 1927, Brazil and Türkiye signed a Friendship Agreement, and in 1930 the Brazilian embassy in Ankara and the Turkish embassy in Rio de Janeiro were opened.

In the first decade of the 21st century, there was a significant strengthening of bilateral ties. In 2009, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made the first visit by a Brazilian Head of State to Türkiye.

Turkish-Brazilian rapprochement took another important step in 2010 – when, during Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Brazil, an Action Plan for Strategic Partnership was signed. The document creates a framework for deepening dialogue and cooperation in fields such as international politics, agriculture, science and technology, foreign trade and energy, among other sectors.

President Dilma Rousseff visited Türkiye in 2011, when agreements on cooperation in the educational area and mutual assistance in criminal matters were signed. Prime Minister Erdogan returned to Brazil in 2012, when he led the Turkish delegation to the Rio+20 Conference.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu came to Brazil in 2022 and again in 2023, on the occasion of the presidential inauguration. He met with Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and the Special Advisor to the Presidency, Ambassador Celso Amorim. In October 2023, the 11th meeting of the Political Consultation Mechanism was held in Istanbul.

The year of 2024 was fruitful for bilateral contacts. In February, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan participated in the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Brazil and met with Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira. In June, the Brazilian Foreign Minister visited Ankara, where he met with Hakan Fidan and was received in audience by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In the same month, Presidents Lula and Erdoğan met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy. In November, the Turkish and Brazilian leaders held a meeting at the G20 Leaders' Summit, in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil and Türkiye support the strengthening of multilateral institutions such as the UN, the IMF and the G20. They also demonstrate a mutual interest in frank and constructive dialogue on major global issues, such as security, trade and cooperation for development.

In the economic field, ties between Brazil and Türkiye have also grown significantly over the last decade. Between 2014 and 2024, trade increased from $2.2 billion to $5.1 billion. Brazil’s trade with Türkiye has shown a surplus since 2014. In 2024,  trade flow hit the highest level on records (a 13.3% increase compared to 2023). Brazilian exports totaled $3.8 billion. They included soybeans (26%); raw cotton (12%); and iron ore and its concentrates (9.6%). Imports totaled $1.3 billion and were consisted largely of non-electric motors and machines, and their parts (11%); salts and peroxyls of inorganic acids and metals (9.2%); and auto parts and accessories (8.9%). The surplus in favor of  Brazil was $2.5 billion.
