Brazil and the then Kingdom of Yugoslavia established diplomatic relations in 1938. After the Second World War, relations have always remained friendly and continued with the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The Brazilian government recognizes Serbia as the legal successor of the extinct Yugoslavia and the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, and its diplomatic relations with that country were established on June 22, 2006.

Bilateral relations are marked by good political dialogue. Brazil and Serbia maintain a political consultations mechanism, whose most recent meeting was held in 2019, in Brasilia. The two countries also have bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding in defense, police, and technical cooperation, in addition to a visa waiver agreement for nationals of both countries. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Ivica Dačić, visited Brazil in 2019 on the occasion of President Jair Bolsonaro’s inauguration.

In 2020, bilateral trade reached $51 million (a decrease of 4% compared to 2019). Exports totaled $23.9 million (a decrease of 22%), imports amounted to $27.1 million (an increase of 20%), and deficit came to $3.2 million. Main exports were of fresh bovine meat (24%); roasted coffee beans (23%), and tobacco (15%), while top imported products included non-electric machines (30%); tubes, pipes and hoses (25%), and rubber tyres (13%).
