Republic of North Macedonia

Brazil recognized the independence of North Macedonia in 1995, and diplomatic relations were established in 1998. For Brazil, its relationship with North Macedonia is part of its policy to strengthen contacts with Balkan countries.
In 2013, the first visit to Brazil by a head of government of North Macedonia took place. Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski met with Brazilian political and economic authorities, as well as officials from the states of São Paulo and Paraná. In Brasília, an educational cooperation agreement was signed.
In 2017, President Gjorge Ivanov visited Brazil, the first visit of a Macedonian head of state to the country. He was received by then-President Michel Temer and officially inaugurated the Embassy of North Macedonia in Brasília, the first resident embassy of that country in Latin America. President Ivanov also visited Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, where he met with then-Governor Geraldo Alckmin and business leaders.
The first political consultations meeting took place in 2004 in Brasília. The Macedonian delegation was led by the then State Counselor for bilateral relations with European and non-European countries of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Igor Popov, currently the ambassador of North Macedonia in Brasília. In 2018, the then Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Macedonia, Viktor Dimovski, visited Brazil, when the second bilateral political consultations meeting was held. In 2024, the third political consultations meeting was held via videoconference. The Brazilian delegation was led by the Secretary for Europe and North America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maria Luisa Escorel, and the Macedonian delegation was led by the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Ambassador Elena Kuzmanovska Biondikj.
Brazil and North Macedonia have two agreements in force: a Reciprocal Understanding, by Exchange of Notes, for the Establishment of Visa Exemption for Nationals of Both Countries, signed in 2016, and the aforementioned Educational Cooperation Agreement, signed in 2013.
