Republic of Nicaragua

Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Nicaragua, established in 1906, have traditionally been close and friendly. In the 1980s, Brazil took part in the Contadora Support Group, within the context of efforts to promote peace in Central America. The first official visit of a Brazilian head of state to Nicaragua took place in 2007, during President Lula’s second term.
Technical cooperation, the main pillar of the bilateral relationship, is supported by the Basic Agreement on Scientific and Technical Cooperation between Brazil and Nicaragua, in force since 2008.
Bilateral trade, amounting to about $136 million (2024), has shown a gradual resumption of growth after the Covid-19 pandemic. Brazilian exports have been concentrated in corn and various manufactured goods, while imports from Nicaragua have consisted mainly of metal scrap, energy distribution equipment, and cigars.
