Republic of Namibia

In 1990, with the independence of Namibia, diplomatic relations were established, and the Brazilian Embassy in Windhoek was opened. Over the following decades, several agreements were signed – such as the Agreement on Naval Cooperation (1994), the Basic Agreement on Technical Cooperation (1995), and the new Agreement on Technical Cooperation (2001) – and several high-level visits took place. Namibia opened its Embassy in Brasilia in 2003.

Naval cooperation is one of the main axes of the relations between Brazil and Namibia, involving personnel training, shipbuilding, and technical support for the continental shelf survey process.

Over the past few years, hundreds of Namibian officers and private soldiers have been trained and completed internships at various Brazilian Navy educational establishments and ships, and many hold command positions in Namibia's naval forces.

Namibia is a member of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), with which MERCOSUR has signed a preferential trade agreement (2009).
