Republic of Indonesia

Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Indonesia were established in 1953. Since 2008, the two countries have maintained a Strategic Partnership.
Memoranda of understanding are in force in the areas of agriculture; banking; education; energy and mining; poverty eradication; and the promotion of trade and investment. The two countries also have bilateral dialogue mechanisms, namely political consultations and a joint commission, as well as mechanisms in the agricultural and trade and investment sectors.
In 2017, the two countries signed a Defense Cooperation Agreement. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest operators of Embraer’s Super Tucano aircraft.
In 2018, Indonesia was Brazil’s 11th largest trading partner in Asia, with trade exchange totaling more than $ 2.8 billion, including $1.5 billion in Brazilian exports (mainly soybean meal, cotton, and tobacco) and $1.3 billion in imports from Indonesia (notably synthetic and textile fibers, refined palm kernel oil, natural rubber, and motor vehicles and tractors parts). Indonesia is the largest economy among the ten members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), founded in 1967. In 2018, Brazil’s trade with ASEAN countries reached more than $19.4 billion.
There are significant reciprocal investments between the countries, highlighting Brazilian investment in mining in Indonesia and Indonesian investments in Brazil in the sugar-alcohol, pulp and paper, tobacco, and textile sectors.
