Republic of Guinea-Bissau

Brazil opened its Embassy in Guinea-Bissau in 1974, the same year of the country's national independence. The Embassy of Guinea-Bissau in Brasília was opened in 2011.

The bilateral relationship is marked, above all, by technical cooperation, which covers areas such as health, agriculture, education, professional training. The cooperation provided by Brazil to Guinea-Bissau is conducted both bilaterally and multilaterally through the CPLP. Guinea-Bissau has also benefited from three projects financed by the IBSA Fund.

Regarding educational cooperation, it should be noted that, between 2000 and 2020, through the Students-Agreement Program, 1,426 Bissau-Guineans attended undergraduate courses (the country with the 2nd largest number of participants in the period). A total of 590 Bissau-Guineans have already graduated from the International University of Afro-Brazilian Lusophony (UNILAB).

Like Brazil, Guinea-Bissau is a founding member state of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP, acronym in Portuguese), an international organization in which the two countries maintain political-diplomatic consultation and promote projects of cooperation and dissemination of the Portuguese language.

The bilateral commercial exchange totaled nearly $ 2.5 million in 2022, with a $1.7 million surplus in favor of Brazil.

2023 – President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and foreign minister Suzi Barbosa attend  the inauguration ceremony of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília

2022 – President Umaro Sissoco Embaló participates in the celebrations of the Bicentenary of Independence in Brasília

2021 – President Umaro Sissoco Embaló visits Brazil. Visits the Portuguese Language Museum, in São Paulo

2016 – The president of the National Popular Assembly of Guinea-Bissau, deputy Cipriano Cassamá, visits Brazil and participates in the 6th Meeting of the CPLP Parliamentary Assembly, held in Brasília on April 5-7.

2015 – President José Mário Vaz visits Brazil

2011 – Opening of the Embassy of  Guinea-Bissau in Brasília; the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Antônio Patriota, visits Guinea-Bissau

2010 – President Malam Bacai Sanhá visits Brazil

2007 – Creation of the Configuration for Guinea-Bissau of the UN Peacebuilding Commission. Brazil assumes its presidency

2005 – President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva visits Guinea-Bissau; the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, António Isaac Monteiro, visits Brazil

1974 – National independence of Guinea-Bissau and immediate Brazilian recognition; opening of the Embassy of Brazil in Bissau
