Republic of Ghana

Brazil and Ghana established diplomatic relations in 1960. The Embassy in Accra, opened in 1961, was the first one of Brazil in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Embassy of Ghana in Brasília is the only Embassy of that country in South America.

In the 1960s and 1970s, relations were marked by a common agenda focused on the condemnation of apartheid and on the self-determination of peoples, among other issues. In the 1980s, Ghana co-sponsored the draft resolution presented by Brazil at the UN for the creation of the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone (ZOPCAS).

Bilateral relations received a new impetus from the 2000s, with the intense exchange of visits by high authorities. Ghana has been one of Brazil's closest partners in West Africa, which is reflected in the increase in political dialogue and bilateral trade, and the strengthening of technical cooperation.

Brazil and Ghana also share important cultural ties, an example of which is the Tabom community, formed by descendants of Brazilian slaves who returned to Ghana, especially to the Greater Accra region, between 1829 and 1936.
