Republic of Cuba

The history of the Cuban-Brazilian relationship goes through the rapprochement built since the re-establishment of diplomatic relations in 1986, followed by distancing in the recent period.

In 2018, bilateral trade totaled $376.56 million. Brazilian exports to Cuba amounted to $342.81 million, while imports totaled $33.75 million. The bilateral balance is favorable to Brazil, with a surplus of $309.06 million.

2018 – The Minister of Health Ricardo Barros visits Havana

2015 – Minister Mauro Vieira makes his first official visit to Cuba and holds work meetings with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla and with the Minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca Díaz (November 25)

2014 – President Dilma Rousseff visits Cuba. On the occasion, President Dilma and President Raúl Castro lay the foundation stone for the modernization of the Port of Mariel (January 27-28)

2013 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba, Bruno Eduardo Rodríguez Parrilla visits Brazil (May 6)

2013 – Vice-President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba, Marino Alberto Murillo Jorge, visits Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro (April 4)

2012 – President Dilma Rousseff visits Cuba (January 30-31)

2012 – Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio de Aguiar Patriota visits Cuba (Havana, January 16-17)

2011 – The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla visits Brazil (September 28-29)

2010 – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visits Cuba

2008 – President Raúl Castro visits Brazil and attends the First Summit of the Heads and State and Government of Latin America and the Caribbean for the Development and Cooperation, held at Costa do Sauípe

2008 – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva makes two visits to Cuba

2003 – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visits Cuba

1989 – President Fidel Castro visits Brazil

1986 – Diplomatic relations with Brazil are restored

1964 – Diplomatic relations between the two countries are broken off

1962 – Brazil abstains in voting, which resulted in the expulsion of Cuba from the OAS

1959 – The Brazilian government recognizes the revolutionary government of Cuba
