Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Brazil recognized Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992, when it joined the UN, and diplomatic relations were established in 1995. In 2011 the Brazilian Embassy in Sarajevo was opened and the first Brazilian Ambassador to the country presented his credentials to President Nebojša Radmanović.

Between 1992 and 1995, Brazil sent 35 military observers and 10 police monitors to join the UN peace operation in the former Yugoslavia (UNPROFOR).

In 2009 the then Minister of Foreign Affairs Sven Alkalaj made an official visit to Brazil, when an agreement for visa exemption for diplomatic and official passports was signed (in force since May 2010). Minister Alkalaj visited Brazil again in 2010, on the occasion of the World Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations. On the margins of the Forum he met with the then Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Celso Amorim. Minister Amorim made an official visit to Sarajevo in June 2010, when an agreement was signed for the visa exemption for tourists (in force since May 2013). As a result, there was an increase in Brazilian tourism in that country, including pilgrimages to the Catholic shrine of Medjugorje.

In 2010 Brazil decided to open a resident embassy in Sarajevo. The decision was formalized in 2011 and the first Brazilian resident Ambassador presented his credentials to President Nebajevo Radmanović, on June 16 of that year. Brazil is the only country in Latin America with a resident embassy in Sarajevo. Since the opening of the resident embassy, Brazil has started to make direct sales of coffee to Republika Srpska (previously purchases were made through other countries in Europe), and is participating in dissemination and cultural events, some of which are social and humanitarian in nature.

Although still modest, trade between Brazil and Bosnia and Herzegovina shows potential for growth. Due to the international financial crisis of 2009, there has been a downward trend – in 2019, bilateral trade was $ 3.7 million.
