Brazil and Armenia established diplomatic relations in 1992. The Embassy of Brazil in  Yerevan was opened in 2006. In 2010, Armenia appointed its first Ambassador in Brasilia. Since then, the two countries have come closer together, with an emphasis on exchanging support in the multilateral sphere and increasing the number of visits. Bilateral relations are mainly based on the large Armenian community living in the country –  estimated at 40,000 people, 25,000 of them in the State of São Paulo.

The adoption of a visa-free regime for short trips for tourism and business in November 2015 was an important contribution to stimulate exchanges between the two peoples, and the increase in the number of Brazilian tourists in Armenia since then has been remarkable. The Political Consultations Agreement, signed during the visit of former president Serzh Sargsyan to Brazil in 2016, establishes the institutional framework for the systematization of high-level dialogue. On the same occasion, the Agreement on Basic Technical Cooperation, the Educational Cooperation Agreement and the Technical Cooperation Agreement were also signed by the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Government of the Republic of Armenia.

In 2017 the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aloysio Nunes Ferreira, made an official visit to Armenia on November 17. It was the first official visit of a Brazilian Foreign Minister to that country. In Yerevan Minister Aloysio Nunes was hosted by the President of the Armenian Republic, Serzh Sargsyan, and by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edward Nalbandian. The Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Trade and Investment between the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Government of the Republic of Armenia was signed on that occasion.

In 2019 Brazilian exports to Armenia reached $ 22.9 million. Armenian sales to Brazil reached $ 156 thousand. The Brazilian surplus exceeds 20 million dollars ($ 22.7 million). Some of the main products exported by Brazil to Armenia (2019) are: tobacco (69%) and frozen pork (14%). Brazil imports from Armenia women's clothing (55%); men's clothing (19%); and works of art and antiques (13%).

The Embassy of Brazil in Yerevan has been  promoting Brazilian culture in Armenia through concerts, photo and fine arts exhibitions and film festivals. Brazil and Armenia are co-producers of a short film dedicated to the life of Santos Dumont, entitled "The Wild Bird from Brazil".
