Principality of Andorra
From the ninth century until 1993, Andorra was a principality ruled by the Head of State of France and the Spanish Bishop of Seo d'Urgell. In 1993, Madrid and Paris recognized the Principality as a sovereign state. In the same year, Andorra became a full member of the United Nations and, in 1994, of the Council of Europe.
In May 2013, Brazil and Andorra signed a Treaty on Cooperation in Tourism, seeking to encourage the exchange of tourists and mutual investments in the area and to promote cooperation between Brazilian and Andorran tourism boards by exchanging experts and sharing experience and information.
On the occasion of the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the President of the Republic, Michel Temer, had the opportunity to greet the Head of Government of the Principality and his wife during the reception. In the same year, the Minister of Tourism at that time, Henrique Alves, held a meeting with the Minister of Tourism and Commerce of Andorra, Francesc Camp Torres, on the sidelines of the Tourism Fair in Madrid.
In December 2018, President Michel Temer held a meeting with the Head of Government of Andorra on the sidelines of the 26th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, in Antigua, Guatemala. The Brazilian president expressed his interest in improving relations with Andorra and his willingness of working towards the tourism sector, with a view to increasing mutual flow of tourists.
Bilateral trade between Brazil and Andorra is not very significant. In 2017, Brazilian sales totaled 134 thousand dollars, and imports from Andorra amounted to nearly 33 thousand dollars.
As Andorra joined the United Nations, Brazil and the Principality entered into regular political dialogue and began to exchange votes in elections to international bodies. Andorra has supported nearly all the Brazilian candidacies to international organizations.
Andorra held for two years, beginning in November 2018, the pro tempore Secretariat of the Ibero-American General Secretariat and, in this condition, will host meetings at the level of Heads of State and Government and of Foreign Ministers.
The Ambassador of Brazil to Spain has concurrent responsibility for the Principality of Andorra.
