People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria

Brazil and Algeria established diplomatic relations in 1962, when the Brazilian Embassy was established in Algiers. In 1964, Algeria opened its Embassy in Brasília. Bilateral relations gained significant momentum during the 1980s, when the Brazilian-Algerian Joint Commission for Economic, Commercial, Scientific, Technological, Technical and Cultural Cooperation was created. In 1983, President João Figueiredo visited Algeria and, in 1985, President Chadli Bendjedid visited Brazil.
With the end of the Algerian crisis of the 1990s, a new cycle of rapprochement between Brazil and Algeria began, with the intensification of the exchange of high-level bilateral visits and trade flows and the expansion of the legal framework, with the signing of agreements in the areas of trade, defense, maritime transport, culture and agricultural cooperation.
In 2004, the Bilateral Business Council was created. In 2005, then-President Abdelaziz Bouteflika visited Brazil; and in 2006, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva visited Algeria.
