Malaysia
Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Malaysia were established in 1959. The Brazilian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the Malaysian Embassy in Brasília were opened in 1981.
Bilateral agreements on air services, trade relations, and partial visa exemption are in force. In July 2017, a mechanism for political consultations between the two countries was created, which aimed at holding periodic high-level meetings on relevant issues on the bilateral and international agenda.
In 2018, Malaysia was Brazil’s 8th largest trading partner in Asia, with a trade exchange of $3.5 billion, including $2 billion cin Brazilian exports—mainly iron ore, sugar, and corn grains — and $1.5 billion in imports from Malaysia (in particular integrated circuits and electronic microassemblies, rubber accessories, and machine parts and accessories for data processing). Malaysia is one of the ten members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), founded in 1967. In 2018, Brazil’s trade with ASEAN countries totaled more than $19.4 billion.
