Islamic Republic of Afghanistan

Brazil and Afghanistan established diplomatic relations in 1952. The Brazilian Embassy in Islamabad (Pakistan) is cumulatively responsible for representing the nation in Afghanistan.

The Basic Agreement on Technical Cooperation (BATC) was signed in 2006 and during Rio+20, when the Ministers Zalmai Rassoul (Foreign Commerce) and Mohammad Asif Rahimi (Agriculture, Pecuary and Irrigation) were here, two Complementary Adjustments ("Strengthening Rural Extension in Afghanistan" and "Collaborative Approach to Afghanistan's Agroecological Zoning") to the BATC were signed. The Vice-Chancellor, Atiqullah Atifmal, visited Brazil in May 2014.

An example of a technical cooperation project is the partnership established with the Federal University of Lavras for rural extension training offered to afghan technicians (the most recent course took place in October 2018). In addition to agriculture, there are possibilities for cooperation in the fields of renewable energy, mining, education, electoral technology and social policies.

The commercial exchange is modest. The trade flow between Brazil and Afghanistan ended 2018 at US$ 17.41 million, with Brazilian exports of US$ 16.99 million and imports of US$ 420 thousand. The main products exported by Brazil are chicken, corn and coffee.

At the multilateral level, Brazil's participation in the most recent major international conferences on Afghanistan, most recently in Tashkent (2018), stands out. Brazil watch closely the situation in Afghanistan and supports the efforts of the international community towards national reconciliation and reconstruction.
