Ireland

Brazil and Ireland established diplomatic relations in 1975. The Embassy of Brazil in Dublin was opened in 1991, and the Embassy of Ireland in Brasilia was established in 2001. Political dialogue between the two countries is constant and productive.

In 2019, bilateral trade totaled $774 million. Brazil’s imports, of $524 million, consisted mainly of pharmaceutical products and manufactured goods, whereas exports amounted to $520 million and consisted mainly of maize (corn), aircrafts, and aluminum ores.

The Brazilian community in Ireland is estimated at 18,000 nationals. The interest in Ireland among young Brazilians who wish to learn English abroad has helped to change the face and size of that community over the past 15 years.

2017 – The Minister of Training, Skills and Innovation, John Hallinan, visits Brasilia

2015 – Opening of the Consulate General of Ireland in São Paulo

2015 – The  Minister of Education, Jan O'Sullivan, visits Brazil

2012 – President Michael Higgins visits Brazil

2006 – Opening of the South America Office of Enterprise Ireland, a joint agency for trade promotion,  in São Paulo

2006 – The Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Luiz Fernando Furlan, visits Ireland

2004 – President Mary McAleese, accompanied by an important commercial delegation, visits Brazil

2001 – Opening of the Embassy of Ireland in Brasilia

2001 – Prime Minister Bertie Ahern visits Brazil

1999 – Deputy Prime Minister Mary Harney visits Brazil  in the context of negotiations between the European Union and Latin America (Rio Summit)
