Hungary

Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Hungary were established in 1927 and have gained new momentum in recent years. In 2011, the Hungarian government launched a strategic planning document that included Brazil among its foreign policy priorities.
High-level meetings have taken place in recent years. The then President of Hungary, János Áder, attended the Rio+20 Conference in 2012, the opening of the 2016 Olympic Games, and took part in the high-level segment of the 8th World Water Forum in 2018. Then Vice President Michel Temer visited Hungary in 2013.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a football enthusiast, was in Brazil on a private visit during the 2014 FIFA World Cup and, in 2019, attended the inauguration of President Jair Bolsonaro. In February 2022, former President Jair Bolsonaro visited Hungary. Hungarian President Katalin Novák visited Brazil in July 2022.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Ernesto Araújo visited Budapest in May 2019, and Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, visited Brazil in October of that same year. There were two additional bilateral meetings between the two foreign ministers: in February 2020 in Washington, and in November of the same year via videoconference. In September 2021, a meeting took place between former Minister Carlos Alberto Franco França and Péter Szijjártó on the sidelines of the 76th United Nations General Assembly.
Regarding the mechanism for bilateral political consultations, five meetings have been held to date, the most recent taking place in Budapest in February 2025.
Bilateral relations benefit from a significant Hungarian community living in Brazil, estimated at around 100,000 people, most of whom reside in the state of São Paulo.
Bilateral trade has traditionally shown a Hungarian surplus. According to MDIC/ComexStat data, in 2024 there was a 27.8% increase in bilateral trade flow compared to the previous year, reaching $777.5 million.
In November 2020, the Hungarian government signed a contract to purchase two C-390 Millennium cargo aircrafts manufactured by Embraer. Hungary became the third country in the world to operate the C-390 Millennium and the second within NATO, after Portugal, opening new sales prospects to other member states.
