Brazil recognized Georgia’s Independence in December 1991 and established diplomatic relations in April 1993. Georgia opened its Embassy in Brasilia in July 2010, and Brazil opened its resident Embassy in Tbilisi in June 2011.

The opening of both Embassies has fostered high-level contacts. A number of Georgian authorities visited Brasília, including Foreign Minister  Grigol Vashadze (August 2011), Prime Minister Maia Panjikidze (April 2013), Vice President of Georgia’s Parliament Manana Kobakhidze (November 2013).

President Giorgi Margvelashvili attended the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympic Games on August 5, 2016, along with the Minister of Sports. That year, Foreing Minister Mauro Vieria held a meeting with his Georgian counterpart Mikheil Janelidze on the sidelines of the 52nd Munich Security Conference.

In 2017, Minister of Foreign Affairs Aloysio Nunes Ferreira traveled to Tbilisi. It was the first visit of a Brazilian Foreign Minister to Georgia. On the occasion, the Foreign Minister of Georgia was invited to visit Brazil. In addition, the two Ministers discussed the prospect of signing several instruments to strengthen economic and trade relations between the two countries and of promoting cooperation in other areas, including tax, customs, tourism, and defense. During the visit, Aloysio Nunes was hosted by President Giorgi Margvelashvili, Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze.

In June 2018, Minister of Justice Torquato Jardim traveled to Tbilisi. During the visit he addressed prospects for cooperation in the fight against organized trafficking and also held meetings with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs  of Geoergia Giorgi Gakharia, with Minister of Justice Tea Tsulukiani and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs David Zalkaliani.

The Foreign Ministers of Brazil and Georgia met in 2019 on the sidelines of the Davos World Economic Forum. On the occasion, they once again addressed a possible visit of the Georgian Foreign Minister to Brazil.

In 2019, Brazilian exports to Georgia reached $185 million (75th largest importer of Brazilian goods) while Georgian exports to Brazil totaled $8.65 million (105th largest exporter to Brazil), which accounted for a Brazilian surplus of more than $176 million. Some of the main Brazilian exports to Georgia in 2019 included intermediate goods (69.5%) and extractive industry products (30.3%). Brazil imports from Georgia iron alloys (85%), polymers (5.1%), and fruit and nuts (5.1%).
