Visit to Brazil of the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry
Following the February 10 meeting between President Lula and President Biden in Washington, D.C., the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, was received on Monday (27.Feb) at the Itamaraty Palace by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. The minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva; the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Laura da Rocha; the President of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), Aloizio Mercadante; and other Brazilian government authorities participated in the meeting. Ambassador Elizabeth Bagley and senior US officials were also present. The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, as well as the Chief Advisor of the Presidency, Ambassador Celso Amorim, joined the Brazilian delegation at the luncheon following the meeting.
Topics relevant to Brazil-U.S. relationship in strategic areas such as climate change, combating deforestation, strengthening adaptation, and cooperation for sustainable development. The U.S. official reiterated his government's interest in contributing to Brazilian initiatives in the protection and recovery of forests, encouraging bioeconomy and supporting indigenous peoples. Mr. Kerry indicated that his administration is studying the best way to make this contribution, including by means of funds to the Amazon Fund. In the afternoon, John Kerry and his delegation held bilateral meetings with the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, and with the BNDES staff.
