The New International Coffee Agreement
The Brazilian government celebrates the approval on June 9 of the new International Coffee Agreement in the framework of the 133rd Special Session of the International Coffee Council in London.
With the approval of the agreement, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) has become a forum for permanent dialogue among participants in the global value chain, with a view to promoting sustainability in the coffee industry.
Brazil's intense engagement in the negotiation of the agreement contributed to the structural changes required for the modernization of the Organization.
Among the agreement's innovations, the ICO structure has incorporated the private sector and other interested actors, who will be able to actively participate in the work of the Organization, with voice but not vote, thus guaranteeing the intergovernmental nature of ICO.
The agreement will enter into force when two-thirds of the exporting and importing member countries have deposited their instruments of ratification.
