PRESS RELEASE N. 53
Start of Brazil's accession process to the International Energy Agency as a full member - Joint Note MRE/MME
The Brazilian government welcomed the decision by the Governing Board of the International Energy Agency (IEA) to start Brazil's accession process toward full membership. The decision was taken yesterday (February 19) at a ministerial meeting of the Board in Paris.
In July 2025, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira formalized, in a letter to the Executive Director of the IEA, the Brazilian government's decision to begin accession procedures. The request followed the approval of Resolution No. 5/2025 by the National Council on Energy Policy, which declared Brazil's accession to the IEA as a measure of interest of the National Energy Policy.
Brazil has been an association country of the IEA since 2017. The partnership with the Agency, strengthened during Brazil's presidencies of the G20 and COP30, covers topics such as energy security, energy transition, carbon accounting, data and statistics, and analysis of public policies in the energy sector.
The IEA currently has 33 member countries, 13 association countries, and 4 accession countries.
