A ceremony to sign the Treaty of Constitution of the Community of Police of the Americas (AMERIPOL) was held today, November 9, at the Palácio da Justiça. The Treaty grants AMERIPOL international legal personality, serving as a mechanism for cooperation and information exchange between the police and security forces of the countries of the Americas.
Brazil signed the act along with the following twelve other countries of the continent: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Haiti, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic, Suriname, and Uruguay.
International cooperation is a strategic element for combating organized crime, which affects all countries in the Americas. The signing of the AMERIPOL Treaty in Brasília is a demonstration of the priority given by the Brazilian government to both strengthening international cooperation against crime and promoting integration with the countries of the region.
AMERIPOL's central mission is to enable the coordinated action of public security forces in the prevention, investigation, and combat of transnational criminal phenomena. In this context, it will promote international police cooperation through the exchange of information, the sharing of knowledge, the provision of technical assistance, and the development of coordinated investigations, among other activities. The headquarters of the organization will be in Bogotá, Colombia.
