PRESS RELEASE N. 4
Return of Brazil to the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration
The Brazilian Government communicated today to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Presidents of the UN General Assembly and of the IOM Council and the Head of the Secretariat of the Network of Nations Nations on Migration its decision to reintegrate the country into the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
The Global Compact for Migration, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2018, establishes parameters for the management of migration flows. The document contains commitments such as ensuring migrants' access to basic services, already contemplated by the Brazilian Migration Law, considered one of the most advanced in the world.
Brazil stopped participating in initiatives on the implementation of the document in 2019. Brazil's return to the Compact reinforces the Brazilian Government's commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of the more than 4 million Brazilians living abroad.
