PRESS RELEASE N. 118
Presidency of Brazil at the MTCR
The Brazilian Government is pleased to inform the unanimous approval today, 31/3, of the name of Ambassador Antonio José Vallim Guerreiro to chair the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) for the biennium 2023-2024.
Ambassador Antonio Guerreiro was Brazil's permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and to the United Nations Disarmament Conference, and was also Brazil's ambassador to Belgium and Russia.
Comprising 35 states, the MTCR aims to prevent the use of long-range missile technologies as vectors for weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical and biological).
The unanimous support to the Brazilian request is an eloquent expression of the recognition of Brazil's commitment to multilateralism and to the prevention of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery.
By thanking its partners for their support, the Brazilian Government, as Chair of the MTCR, is committed to promoting a balance between the control of sensitive missile technologies and the right to exchange, access and develop these technologies for legitimate purposes, including space programs.
Brazil has been a member of the MTCR since 1995, and already chaired the Regime in 2009. Brazil will succeed Switzerland as Chair of the MTCR on the occasion of the 35th Plenary Meeting, scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, in the second half of 2023.
