PRESS RELEASE N. 509
Plenary Meeting of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) - Rio de Janeiro, October 30 - November 3, 2023
Brazil took on the presidency of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) for the biennium 2023-2024 on November 1st.
The presidency commences with the 35th Plenary Meeting of the MTCR in Rio de Janeiro from November 1st to 3rd, which was inaugurated by Minister Mauro Vieira this afternoon. Brazil's presidency will be carried out by Ambassador Flávio Soares Damico, Brazil's Special Representative to the Conference on Disarmament.
The MTCR is an informal regime consisting of 35 participating States, aimed at limiting the risk of proliferation of missile technologies and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as delivery systems for weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical, and biological).
During its presidency of the MTCR, the Brazilian government will strive to promote a balance between controlling sensitive missile technologies and the right to exchange, access, and develop these technologies for legitimate purposes, including space programs.
A member of the MTCR since 1995, Brazil's unanimous election by its peers to lead the regime underscores the country's credentials in controlling the export of sensitive dual-use goods.
