Official Visit of Minister Mauro Vieira to ASEAN Member States - October 9th to 13th, 2023
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mauro Vieira, will undertake an official visit to Indonesia, Cambodia, and the Philippines from October 9 to October 13. All three countries are members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
In Jakarta on October 9, the Minister will hold a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi, to discuss topics related to the strategic partnership between Brazil and Indonesia, established in 2008.
Together with Minister Marsudi and the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Mauro Vieira will participate in the 1st Brazil-ASEAN Trilateral Meeting, during which the implementation of Brazil's Sectoral Dialogue Partnership with ASEAN will be launched.
Still in Jakarta, the Minister will inaugurate the Ethanol Talks seminar, an event organized by the private sector with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The seminar aims to bring Brazil, Indonesia, and other ASEAN countries together to discuss biofuels as a viable alternative for energy transition.
On October 11, he will pay a visit to Cambodia, marking the first visit by a Brazilian chancellor to the country. The Minister will be received by Prime Minister Hun Manet and will hold a working meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Sok Chenda Sophea. Cambodia recently opened an embassy in Brasília, its first in South America.
On October 13, Minister Mauro Vieira will be received by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, Enrique Manalo. This visit marks the first time a Brazilian chancellor has visited the Philippines since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1946.
Collectively, the ten member states of ASEAN represent the world's fifth-largest economy. According to IMF projections, ASEAN countries will contribute to 10% of global GDP growth in 2023, more than double their share in the world economy. With a population of approximately 670 million people, ASEAN is, as a whole, Brazil's third-largest trading partner. In the past 12 months, Brazil's trade with ASEAN countries amounted to USD 33.7 billion.
