Meeting on the Sustainable Development Global Indicators to monitor the 2030 Agenda – Brasilia, April 26, 2016

A meeting on the Global Indicators to monitor the Sustainable Development Goals will be held at the auditorium of the Rio Branco Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brasilia, on April 26. The event will be attended by Dr. Wasmália Bivar, President of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE); by Ambassador José Antonio Marcondes de Carvalho, Undersecretary General for the Environment, Energy and Science and Technology of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; by the Resident Coordinator of the UN System in Brazil, Niky Fabiancic; by Mr. Romulo Paes, Director of the World Center for Sustainable Development (Rio+ Center); by the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG), Francisco Gaetani; and by representatives of the Ministry of the Environment  and of the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA).

A press conference will also be held at the auditorium of the Rio Branco Institute, at 9:00 am on April 26. During the meeting, representatives of the Brazilian Government and of the United Nations will discuss: (i) the Brazilian participation in the construction process of the indicators to monitor the SDG; and (ii) the production and management of statistical information and data to support public policies for sustainable development.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals, whose negotiating process was launched at the Rio+20 Conference, in July 2012, represent the most comprehensive and bold collective effort to improve the quality of life, eradicate poverty and promote sustainable development. They constitute the central axis of the 2030 Agenda, which entered into force on January 1st, 2016, after being approved by all 193 UN Member States, during the General Assembly 70th Session, in September 2015. The 2030 Agenda is a detailed guide to inspire and guide actions in the three dimensions of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental), in all countries, for the next 15 years.

The implementation of the 17 SDGs will require a solid framework of indicators to support the planning of public policies in all spheres and levels of the Government, to allow monitoring its progress and to ensure transparency and participation of all actors, including the private sector and civil society. The final set of indicators will be submitted to the UN Member States on the General Assembly 71st Session, in September 2016, in New York.
