Meeting of President Jair Bolsonaro with President Joe Biden, on the margins of the Summit of the Americas
The President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, met with the President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, in Los Angeles on June 9, 2022. On that occasion, President Bolsonaro thanked the U.S. President for his invitation to the IX Summit of the Americas and for the bilateral meeting, which allowed for a wide exchange of views on issues from the bilateral, regional, and international agenda.
Brazil and the United States have almost two centuries of diplomatic relations, a relationship based on shared principles and values, such as democracy, the rule of law, economic freedom, and human rights. Bilateral relations are currently at a positive stage, with ample possibilities to deepen cooperation on issues such as energy, defense, space, science and technology, and trade and investment, with an emphasis on greater integration of supply chains in key sectors for both economies.
President Bolsonaro expressed the Brazilian desire to continue to work with the United States for democratic values in the hemisphere, in line with the commitments made at the regional level.
The two leaders emphasized the role of cooperation between Brazil and the United States in the search for solutions to challenges such as food security, energy transition, and sustainable development. They also highlighted the important bilateral cooperation in confronting the COVID-19 pandemic and the determination to jointly contribute to strengthening the capacity of the entire region in the area of health. They also underscored joint efforts in the humanitarian area, especially in welcoming refugees.
During the meeting, Presidents Bolsonaro and Biden discussed the importance of maintaining a strengthened dialogue between the two countries in international forums such as the OAS, WTO, OECD, and the United Nations Security Council, which Brazil will chair next July.
