PRESS RELEASE N. 15
Joint Statement on the Signing of the Association Agreement between MERCOSUR and the European Union
The MERCOSUR States Parties —Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay—are pleased to announce the signing of the Association Agreement and the Interim Trade Agreement with the European Union. The signing is a historic achievement that strengthens commercial, political, and cooperative ties between the two regions.
These instruments were signed by the Foreign Ministers of the MERCOSUR States Parties and the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security. The ceremony also featured the distinguished presence of senior officials from the MERCOSUR States Parties and the European Union, as guests of honor.
These Agreements establish a comprehensive and balanced framework that promotes the exchange of goods and services, investment, and economic development.
For MERCOSUR, this provides preferential access to the EU, the world’s third-largest economy, a market of 450 million people, and about 15% of global GDP. The European Union will eliminate tariffs on 92% of MERCOSUR exports, valued at approximately $61 billion[1]. Preferential access will also be granted for an additional 7.5%, equivalent to $4.7 billion[2], thereby benefiting almost the bloc’s entire exports to the EU. As a result, MERCOSUR’s access to the European market is significantly expanded, trade conditions are improved, and the competitiveness of companies in the region is strengthened.
Moreover, mechanisms for cooperation in strategic areas are established, fostering the economic and social development of the member countries.
With this signing, the MERCOSUR States Parties reaffirm their commitment to regional integration, development, and international cooperation, consolidating a long-term strategic relationship that will deliver tangible benefits for citizens, businesses, and the region’s economy.
