Declaration of Mutual Recognition of Cachaça and Tequila as Designated Names and Typical Products of, respectively, Brazil and Mexico

President Dilma Rousseff and President Enrique Peña Nieto have agreed that their governments will establish mutual recognition of cachaça and tequila as designated names and as typical products originating respectively from Brazil and Mexico.

To this end, the two governments will negotiate over the coming weeks the terms of a bilateral agreement providing reciprocal protection of cachaça and tequila as protected designations that may only be used in accordance with applicable laws  and regulations in Brazil, in the case of cachaça, and in Mexico, in the case of tequila.

The two governments will take the necessary steps to ensure reciprocal protection of cachaça and tequila as distilled beverages originating from Brazil and Mexico respectively, and will provide the legal means to prevent the misuse of such designations.

Under the agreement, the import and commercialization of  cachaça in Mexican territory will only be allowed to cachaça produced in Brazil in accordance with the  laws and regulations in Brazil.

Similarly, the import and marketing of tequila in Brazil will only be allowed to tequila produced in Mexico in accordance with the  laws and regulations in Mexico.
