Joint Statement from Brazil and Spain on kidnapping in international waters

The Governments of Brazil and Spain condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the abduction of two of their nationals in international waters by the Government of Israel.

Both individuals were aboard vessels of the Global Sumud flotilla, which were intercepted and boarded by Israeli forces off the coast of Greece. They were not released during the interception of these vessels, nor following the subsequent disembarkation of passengers and crew on the island of Crete.

This blatantly illegal action by the Israeli authorities, outside their jurisdiction, constitutes an affront to international law, is subject to adjudication before international courts, and amounts to a criminal offense under our respective jurisdictions. 

The Governments of Brazil and Spain call upon the Government of Israel to ensure the immediate return of their nationals, with full guarantees for their safety, and to grant without delay consular access for their assistance and protection.
