On February 25 and 26, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) will host the first meeting of sherpas under Brazil’s BRICS presidency. This event will be an opportunity for Brazil to present its priorities and objectives to the other members of the group.
Sherpas are special envoys appointed by the heads of state/government of BRICS member countries, responsible for guiding the discussions leading up to the Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for July 6 and 7 in Rio de Janeiro.
The sherpas meeting will be chaired by Ambassador Mauricio Carvalho Lyrio, Secretary for Economic and Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Brazil’s BRICS sherpa.
Over the two days, there will be four thematic sessions, in addition to the opening session—with the participation of Minister Mauro Vieira—and a special session featuring President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
During the thematic sessions, participants will address priority issues for Brazil’s rotating presidency, including: (i) global health cooperation; (ii) climate change; (iii) trade, investment, and finance; (iv) artificial intelligence governance; and (v) BRICS institutional development.
During the special session with President Lula, alongside representatives of BRICS member countries (Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran), ambassadors from partner countries (Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan) are also expected to attend.
