Entry into force of the new International Coffee Agreement

The new International Coffee Agreement entered into force on 2 February 2011. The Brazilian delegation played an active part in negotiating this Agreement, with a position arising from coordination between representatives of the public and private sectors within the Governing Board for Coffee Policy (CDPC).

The International Coffee Organization comprises most coffee producing and consuming countries and plays a significant role in fostering coffee research programs and development projects.

There are innovations in the new Agreement with regard to the previous 2001 instrument, especially with respect to the termination of the Executive Board and the creation of the Committees on Finance and Administration, Promotion and Market Development, Projects and Statistics, which are expected to speed up the ICO activities. Furthermore, the Consultative Forum on Coffee Sector Finance was created, which will make possible to exchange information and debate issues pertaining to the finance for the coffee sector and the management of its risks, an issue of great interest to the producing countries.
