PRESS RELEASE NO. 113
Election of Albert Ramdin as Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS)
Brazil congratulates Surinamese Foreign Minister Albert Ramdin on his election, by acclamation, to the post of Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) for a five-year term. As of May 25, he will succeed the current OAS Secretary General, Luis Almagro. This marks the first time that a representative of a Caribbean country has occupied this position.
The Brazilian Government is confident that Ambassador Ramdin, given his extensive experience and distinguished career, will play a pivotal role in strengthening the OAS and hemispheric relations.
While extending its best wishes for his success, Brazil reaffirms its strong commitment to working with the new Secretary General to implement the OAS mandates, and to ensure that the Organization continues to serve as a forum for dialogue, cooperation, and consensus-building.
Brazil values the OAS as an important platform for addressing common challenges in democracy, human rights, integral development, and multidimensional security. The Brazilian Government trusts that under the leadership of the new Secretary General, the OAS will be further empowered to promote a stable, democratic, just, and prosperous region, reflective of the interests of all.
