PRESS RELEASE N. 63
Ceremony "Brazil and the remembrance of the Holocaust: legacy and commitments”
The ceremony "Brazil and the remembrance of the Holocaust: legacy and commitments" took place today at the Itamaraty Palace. The event comes in the wake of Brazil's accession to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) as an observer member last November by decision of President Jair Bolsonaro. The IHRA is na international organization based in Berlin that brings together governments, academia, and experts to strengthen and promote education, research and memory of the Holocaust.
The ceremony paid tribute to Aracy de Carvalho Guimarães Rosa and Ambassador Luiz Martins de Souza Dantas, members of the Brazilian Foreign Service. They stood out for their courage and humanitarian efforts to save citizens persecuted by the Nazi regime, especially Jews, during World War II. Both civil servants were recognized as "Righteous Among the Nations" by Yad Vashem, an international reference memorial on the Holocaust based in Israel.
The commitment to the protection of the memory of the Holocaust is not limited to remembering the pain and suffering of millions of victims of the Nazi regime. Brazil's accession to the IHRA also signifies the commitment of the Brazilian State to educate new generations, and support corresponding public policies.
The experience of other IHRA members on the subject of memory preservation will henceforth be shared with the Brazilian government and with representatives of civil society committed to protecting the memory of the Holocaust, promoting human rights and strengthening the rule of law.
Brazil reiterates its commitment to protecting the memory of the Holocaust and fighting anti-Semitism. It thus pays tribute to the millions of victims of the Nazi regime and to the sacrifice of FEB soldiers in World War II.
