Candidature of Ambassador Rafael Mariano Grossi for Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
The Brazilian Government expresses its full support for the candidature of Argentine Ambassador Rafael Mariano Grossi for Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
A diplomat with extensive multilateral experience, particularly on issues related to the nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation regime, Ambassador Grossi has all the necessary qualifications to become the head the IAEA secretariat.
Current Ambassador of Argentina to Vienna and permanent representative to the international organizations based in that capital, Grossi has held, among other positions, the chairmanship of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), and the position of chief of staff of both the IAEA Director General and the Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
In addition to recognizing Ambassador Grossi's solid credentials, the support of Brazil for the Argentine candidature is part of the bilateral strategic partnership in the nuclear field, the most eloquent expression of which is the Brazilian-Argentine Agency for Accounting and Control of Nuclear Materials (ABACC), created 25 years ago.
