Brazil's Election to the Presidency of the Nuclear Suppliers Group
The Brazilian government warmly welcomes the unanimous election held today, July 14, in Buenos Aires, of Brazilian Ambassador Claudia Vieira Santos as the President of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) for the 2023-24 term.
The NSG is an informal regime of export controls established to promote the coordination of national policies among its 48 participating governments in the transfer of sensitive goods and technologies in the nuclear field, with the aim of ensuring their exclusive peaceful use.
This will be Brazil's second time presiding over the NSG. At the end of the current term, in July 2024, the 33rd NSG Plenary Meeting will be held in Brazil.
Brazil's election to lead the NSG confirms its credentials in the control of exports of sensitive dual-use goods, which, if diverted from exclusively peaceful purposes, could contribute to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
