PRESS RELEASE N. 125
Brazilian cachaça gains further access to the Australian market – MRE/MAPA joint press release
The Brazilian government welcomed the announcement by the Australian government on March 19 regarding the loosening of customs regulations that restricted the entry of Brazilian cachaça into that country.
Sugarcane distilled beverages, such as cachaça, were required to undergo wooden barrel aging for at least two years before entering the Australian market. This requirement was not in line with the traditional production of unaged cachaça in Brazil.
With a view to ensuring access to the Australian market, the Brazilian government held bilateral negotiations with Australia, in high-level authority meetings, through its Embassy in Canberra, and at the WTO.
This market access provides further business opportunities for Brazilian producers and exporters of cachaça in the Australian market. In 2023, Brazil exported more than $20 million in cachaça to nearly 100 countries.
