Brazil is re-elected to the International Maritime Organization Council
Brazil was re-elected today, December 1st, to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the 2024-2025 term.
The IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating international maritime transport in a safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable manner, through cooperation among its 175 Member States, 66 intergovernmental organizations, and 88 non-governmental organizations.
Brazil has been a member of the IMO since 1963 and has been part of the IMO Council since 1967, currently in the category reserved for countries with the greatest interest in global maritime trade.
With over 95% of its trade exchanges conducted by sea, Brazil places great importance on the work of the IMO.
Topics under negotiation within the Organization include the energy transition in the maritime sector, cybersecurity, and the use of autonomous ships in commercial navigation.
