PRESS RELEASE N. 110
Brazil-Germany Partnership within the International Climate Initiative (IKI)
As part of the partnership for an ecological and socially fair transformation, the German government invited the Brazilian government to jointly develop a call for projects under its International Climate Initiative (IKI). This line of cooperation was resumed after more than 5 years without bilateral calls for projects and is expected to support specific priorities of Brazil derived from the Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement, as well as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
The amount of funding made available by the German Federal Ministries – Economy and Climate Action (BMWK), Environment, Nature Protection, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) and Foreign Affairs (AA) – will be up to 65 million euros for three thematic areas: decarbonization of emissions-intensive industries in Brazil (up to 25 million euros); fight against deforestation in non-Amazonian biomes (up to 30 million euros); and sustainable and resilient cities (up to 10 million euros).
The IKI Brazil call for projects should announce its finalist selected proposals at the end of the second half of 2024.
The announcement of the call takes place in the context of deepening of the traditional cooperation between Brazil and Germany on environmental issues. The European country is one of Brazil's main partners in the area.
the German federal government announced a comprehensive package of support for socio-environmental actions in Brazil, totaling 200 million euros, including transfers to the Amazon Fund, projects for protection and sustainable use of forests, an energy efficiency fund, and credit facilitation aimed at reforesting agricultural areas, among other initiatives.
In December 2023, during President Lula's trip to Berlin for the 2nd Meeting of High-Level Intergovernmental Consultations, an additional allocation of around 100 million euros was announced to support the fight against deforestation in the Pantanal, Atlantic Rainforest, Caatinga, and Pampa biomes, and to communities living in Conservation Units in the Amazon, among other initiatives. On the same occasion, the two countries signed joint declarations of intent on the "Establishment of a High-Level Strategic Dialogue on Climate Action and Ambition" and on the "Partnership for Global Development".
