Brazil and South Korea celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations

Brazil and South Korea celebrate today the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Brazil-South Korea relations are founded upon great dynamism and the common interest in enhancing cooperation in a range of sectors. South Korea remains an important trading partner of Brazil in Asia, with trade exchange totaling $6.1 billion between January and September this year. South Korea’s stock of investment in Brazil is estimated at $ 6 billion, with emphasis on the electronic, automotive and semiconductor industries.

The ongoing negotiations on the Mercosur-South Korea free trade agreement meet the mutual interest of harnessing the potential of economic and trade relations, thus, promoting the diversification of bilateral trade. Brazil and South Korea have also worked to expand cooperation in strategic areas such as education, science, technology and innovation.

Brazil is home to the largest South Korean community in Latin America, estimated at 50 thousand people. This community is established mainly in the city of São Paulo and play a decisive role in strengthening ties between our peoples.

In celebrating the progress achieved in the last 60 years, the Brazilian government expects to continue to strengthen this relationship and conveys its best regards to the people of South Korea.
