PRESS RELEASE N. 131
Brazil’s accession to the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) as observer state
On March 14th Brazil informed the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) that it accepted the invitation to join the organization as an observer State, in response to the proposal made by the Director-General of ICESCO, Salim Al Malik, to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
ICESCO was created in 1982 and today has 54 member states from Africa, the Middle East, Asia and South America. The organization, headquartered in Rabat, is a center for development and cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture. ICESCO develops every year around 450 projects in areas such as heritage preservation, technical training, support for innovation and artificial intelligence.
The Brazilian presence at ICESCO as an observer member is part of Brazil's strategy of diversifying foreign partnerships, with benefits to the Brazilian multilateral cultural diplomacy, by deepening its relations with the Organization's member countries and fostering partnerships in ICESCO cooperation projects.
