PRESS RELEASE N. 480
Barbados Agreements on Political Dialogue in Venezuela
The Brazilian government congratulates the government and opposition of Venezuela for signing the Agreements for the Promotion of Political Rights and Electoral Guarantees and for the Guarantee of the Vital Interests of the Nation on October 17 in Barbados.
These agreements, signed in the context of a mediation process led by Norway, are the result of dialogue efforts promoted by various countries, including Brazil, among Venezuelan political actors, with the aim of building consensus that will allow the country to hold presidential elections in 2024.
Following the understandings registered in the Barbados Agreements, the Brazilian government welcomes the announcement of the release of detained opposition members by Venezuela, as well as the partial lifting of sanctions imposed by the United States on that country.
These are significant steps that demonstrate that dialogue is the best path to addressing the social and political challenges faced by Venezuela.
Considering that unilateral sanctions are contrary to international law and harm the populations of affected countries, Brazil believes that the complete and permanent lifting of sanctions will contribute to the normalization of Venezuelan politics and regional stability.
Brazil will continue to contribute to the dialogue process between Venezuelan political forces with a view to lifting all sanctions and conducting free, competitive, and transparent elections next year.
