PRESS RELEASE NO. 233
Approval of 22 New Israeli Settlements in the State of Palestine
The Government of Brazil condemns in the strongest terms the announcement made by the Israeli government on May 29 regarding the approval of 22 new settlements in the West Bank, a territory that is an integral part of the State of Palestine.
This decision constitutes a blatant violation of international law and directly contradicts the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on July 19, 2024, which deemed unlawful Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory and concluded that Israel is under an obligation to immediately cease all new settlement activity and evacuate all settlers from that territory.
Brazil repudiates the repeated unilateral measures taken by the Israeli government, which, by imposing a situation tantamount to annexation of the occupied Palestinian territory, undermine the implementation of the two-State solution.
Brazil also reaffirms its longstanding commitment to an independent and viable State of Palestine, living side by side with Israel in peace and security, within the 1967 borders, including the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
